Need motivation? Tried looking
for it, but can’t find it…under the couch? Behind the bed? In your gym bag? We
get it! Motivation to exercise can be thin on the ground some days but we’ve
been inspired by countless members who have found a way to kickstart their
fitness journeys…and there’s no stopping them now! Here are four tips to start
creating a fitter you!
Move for the love of it
The quickest way to
de-motivate yourself is with fitness activities that are too tough or – on the
flipside - bore you to bits! Rather, write a fitness manifesto that LIGHTS YOU
UP! Do you love dancing? Great, then find a gym class that’s all about music, moving
those hips and having fun! You want to box and sweat it out? Boxercise is a
great high-intensity stress-buster. Prefer to calm your nervous system and
stretch after a hectic day? Go for gentle yoga or try Reformer Pilates to bring
on the Zen. You’ll discover your motivation is off the charts when you’re keen to
get there.
Find your community
You don’t have to go it alone.
Seeking out your new support network, cheer squad or burpee bestie is easier
than you think and may be the motivation you need! Do your research to find a
gym or fitness group that’s positive, welcoming, safe and supportive – hint,
you won’t have to look hard, because that’s us at Genesis! A free trial is a
great way to test the water, something most of our gyms offer. Or, to get
motivated for your first gym session, you may need to phone a friend, and
that’s ok – you’ll never regret having a wing person to lean on…and laugh with.
Just start
You may think you can only
start your fitness journey when you… (insert excuse here: get a cute pair of
gym shoes / a new matching active wear set / a funky water bottle with a quirky
quote emblazoned on it #waternotwine). But no; you really don’t. Just start.
Right now. As you are. Go for a walk. Jog around the block. Find your nearest
gym and visit on the weekend or in your lunch break to get a feel for the
space. Sign up with a personal trainer. And chant your favourite motivational mantra,
‘Progress, not perfection’.
Reach for the stars (but not ALL
the stars, straight away!)
It’s inspiring to have a big-picture
vision for a healthy happy you. But don’t aim SO high that you scare yourself
out of starting in the first place! From supporting our members of all ages and
fitness levels on their health journeys, we know that identifying a long-term
goal as well as shorter, bite-sized goals is a much healthier and sustainable
approach to wellness. Maybe you want to ‘Run a marathon’ or ‘Nail a 5-kilometre
run loop’ in six-months’ time. That’s awesome! Now work backwards, breaking that
vision into smaller steps that you can tick off, such as ‘Walk for 30 minutes
each day’ or ‘Try a new gym class this week’. Celebrate your wins, and make new
mini goals to keep the momentum!
We hope with these motivational tips, you’ll find your fitness journey is easier and breezier to start and sustain!
