Three’s a crowd: Why working out with others is a good idea

Date: Feb 16, 2024    By: Genesis Fitness

The gym is a fantastic place to dedicate your energy, but it doesn't have to be a one-person job. A 1999 study found that 95 percent of people who started a weight-loss program with friends completed the program, compared to the 76 percent who did it alone. So, we've compiled our top four reasons why you should jump on the gym buddy bandwagon.

1. Motivation

Sharing insights about your fitness goals is an excellent way to keep yourself accountable. Plus, this goes up a notch when you enlist the help of your friends to help you make those goals a reality. Whether that be having them peddle by your side in a Cycle class or sweating it out in a sauna sesh.

Tip:

A simple way to start your fitness journey is to lock in a time to sign up for a gym membership, create a workout schedule and write some SMART goals. Although you may have different goals, knowing that your best friend has your back is a foolproof way to keep yourself on track.

2. For the love of competition

A little friendly competition is a brilliant way to improve your commitment to achieving your goals. You can do this by setting a mutual goal you want to cross off and having weekly check-ins to see who's in the lead.

This goal can be anything from:

  • Attending a minimum of 3 x Reformer Pilates Classes per week
  • Walking 10k steps a day
  • Getting 8 hours of sleep per night

You can even create a prize to work towards that motivates both of you to go the extra mile but remember to make sure it's SMART. This means it's something attainable that you can actually purchase or fulfil. We recommend making it health + fitness related like a remedial massage or activewear gift card.

Competition idea:

Take the rivalry a step further by sending regular updates on who's in the lead OR keep your stats close to your chest and work *super* hard to ensure you're on top at the end of your challenge.

3. To lend a helping hand (or two)

Another reason to workout with friends is to get some extra assistance. Friends make amazing spotters and can bring a new outlook to your gym experience. Plus, debrief sessions hit differently when you're both sweating, pumping with endorphins and ready to smash a new PR.

4. Confidence

Been meaning to take your Group Fitness class involvement to the next level? Bringing a friend is a great way to increase your confidence and may be all you need to get your hips swinging a little wider in your next Zumba class.

Working out with friends has a long list of benefits, from motivation to competition and everything in between. Ready to start your fitness journey? Click here to claim your free trial, and don't forget to share this blog with your bestie. We'll see (both of) you soon.
