Armed with a motivation to make a difference and the will to act Katie Ryan is taking action to inspire her local community at Cessnock to combat the obesity levels in their town.
Cessnock has the 6th highest obesity rate in Australia at 23.86% of community members. The town now has a team of local champions who are inspired to help the members of the community become healthier by simply adding movement to their lives.
Katie has challenged her fellow community to “move” out of the top 10 and is leading by example. Katie is the Fitness Manger at Genesis Cessnock and has invited community members to join her on Thursday 19th March where she will complete a 12 hr walk/run starting at 8am and finishing at 8pm as part of the Genesis Fitness Treadmill Challenge.
Her mission along with the entire club is to inspire as many club members and members of the Cessnock community to join her to help move Cessnock out of the top 10 by the end of the year. Katie spoke of her own journey which she hopes will inspire others.
“I myself have struggled, having being overweight and suffering from depression and anxiety. Within 12 months I had lost 18kgs and began my studies to become a personal trainer. From that moment on I decided to dedicate my life to help, educate and encourage others to change their life”.
“We are so proud of Katie for taking the action to encourage her fellow Australians to get moving and make a change in their lifestyle” said John Pirlo, Club Owner. “Plus it’s going to be a great addition to our Treadmill Challenge total, the club will be hard to beat.
Cessnock currently leads the Genesis Treadmill challenge where Genesis Clubs around Australia are attempting to combine the total kilometres run by their members to run the distance around Australian – 14,850 km’s. The club currently sits on 907km and will add some big numbers to the total on Thursday.
David Galbally, National Sales Marketing Manager congratulates Katie for the initiative and encourages the town to get behind her. “We are so excited to see Katie embark on this challenge. We strive to inspire healthier communities with everything we do at Genesis. We hold these types of events regularly as a fun and social way to encourage Australians to get moving. We applaud Katie and the Cessnock club for the initiative. We look forward to celebrating with Cessnock when they drop from the top 10 in the coming months”.
