Starting at a new gym? So exciting! It's a fresh start, an opportunity to push boundaries and transform your body and mind. “Start as you intend to go on” is an old saying that still rings true. If you’re looking to begin at a new gym, then start strong with this seven-step guide.

1: Get familiar with a gym tour

Once you join your new gym, it’s time to get acquainted! Start by taking a walk around the gym floor to understand the layout. Find out where the change room facilities and lockers are located and take a closer look at the areas dedicated to different exercise options, from free weights to cardio exercises, strength training, resistance training, fitness machines and classes. And if you need help, just ask one of the staff team to show you around; they’ll no doubt be happy to!

2: Make sure your gym supports your lifestyle
Life is busy so make it easy! Joining a gym with a convenient location, extended opening hours and lots of different exercise classes to try goes a long way to helping gym life become part of a healthy weekly routine. Ask the gym team and personal trainers to talk you through the equipment and class timetables available, so you can choose the workouts and exercises that suit your lifestyle and light you up!

3: Get to know your fitness support crew
The gym staff and trainers are ready to be your biggest supporters. Enjoy having access to knowledgeable and friendly professionals who can guide and cheer you on to reach your fitness potential. Consider booking sessions with an experienced personal trainer so you can start with a personalised plan. They’ll help you learn how to use machines correctly and proper exercise techniques to prevent the risk of injury.

4: Find your fitness fam
Want to know a major key to motivation? It’s finding your crew! Being part of a gym community that’s positive, welcoming and inclusive is a great motivator. To meet like-minded people, try joining a group class in your favourite exercise, such as yoga, Reformer Pilates or an endorphin-pumping spin session. Or bring a bestie along to kickstart gym life with you.

5: Get your health check-up
Check if your gym offers a fitness consultation so you can start your gym membership with an overall health and wellness evaluation. There are a range of tests to explore cardiovascular and muscular endurance, muscle strength, flexibility and body composition. With this personal data, you’ll be able to set goals and track your progress to achieve your health and fitness goals with greater precision and self-awareness.

6: Improve your wellbeing with warm-up and cool-down exercises
Stretching is vital, both before and after your workouts. Ask the gym staff to show you the best place to do your warm-up and cool-down exercises. Your new gym may have designated stretching areas equipped with yoga mats, padded floors and mirrors, as well as specific stretching equipment such as rollers and bands. Ask your personal trainer for a customised stretching plan, with a mix of static and dynamic stretching exercises, to suit your fitness goals.

7. Remember to hydrate
Drinking water during your gym sessions helps you avoid dehydration, regulates your body temperature, supports mental clarity and boosts muscle recovery. When starting at a new gym, ask where the water stations are located so you can top-up your water bottle as needed.

Now go forward and conquer your new gym with confidence and start the way you intend to continue – awesomely! Remember to embrace the challenges, celebrate the small victories and stay as consistent as you can. Here's to your new fitness adventure that will shape your life for the better!
