It's not uncommon for us to glance across the gym floor and be met by a sea of people wearing - headphones. Thankfully, we have thick skin and don't take people blocking us out personally because we also believe in the power of a solid banger (or two). Music is a fantastic tool that can be harnessed to help you crush your workout routine without skipping a beat. Although not all workout playlists are created equally, so we've listed some easy ways to ensure your playlist is always on point.
1. Motivating
First, you want to ensure the music encourages you to get up and going. We're big believers in embracing the power of the beat to get you into a fat-burning rhythm. Everyone's music taste is subjective, but we suggest sticking to the faster melodies while you hit the cardio section to get you hyped and vice versa when you're cooling down. We love a bit of electronic dance music to get us in the mood to crush our goals. We do this by tracking the beat and keeping in time with it. This doesn't mean you can't flick on Pavarotti if that's what gets you hyped. The choice is yours. Music can also take you to your happy place, so zoning into your favourite playlist is a fantastic way to get it done.
Tip:
Take a moment to write down 5 x songs you can't listen to without tapping your foot and congratulate yourself for uncovering playlist gold.
2. Inspiring
As you know, there's a lot more to music than a few beats and an instrument. Lyrics are incredibly powerful words that can inspire fitness success. A study found that participants who listened to music during physical activity ran longer on the treadmill. This music doesn't have to be anything in particular — it can be a breakup song by T-Swift or The Gummy Bear song. Whatever floats YOUR boat.
Inspirational song suggestion:
Rise by Katy Perry Rise by has excellent lyrics that are worth listening to get you up and moving. Interestingly, it was also the NBC's 2016 Rio Olympics theme song. So, if it's good enough for the athletes, it's good enough for us.
3. Interactive
Depending on how you listen to your music, creating a shared playlist with your friends is an interactive way to take it up a notch. You can do this the old-fashioned way, verbally next to your bestie or via creating a shared playlist. Listening to your friends' tunes will 1) expose you to their taste in music and 2) strengthen your bond with them. You can even step back in time and create a retro mixtape if you're that way inclined.
4. Accessible
Regardless of where you listen to your bangers, it's important to ensure they're easy to access. This will take the difficulty away from putting on your favourite playlist. Making it easier to access is also great because there's nothing worse than having to search around for a playlist. This could include pinning your workout playlist to your favourites or saving it to your home screen —whatever works best for you.
5. Fresh
Considering all of the above, it's important to ensure that your playlist is up to date. You already know what to do if it's not motivating or inspiring.
We've created a handy checklist to help you curate the perfect playlist (or freshen up your current one):
Motivating
Is it fast? If the answer is no, add 2 x new upbeat songs.
Inspiring
Are the lyrics inspiring? Add 2 x new *empowering* songs to the mix.
Interactive
Ask your bestie for 2 x song suggestions. Bonus points if it's completely different from your taste in music.
Accessible
How long does it take you to access it? It should be quicker than you can say, "Music!"
Fresh
If you've done the above, we know it's sounding fresher already.
We hope you're feeling energised and ready to create the perfect workout playlist. Still in need of inspiration? We've created our idea of the ultimate playlist here.
