What should you do after a workout to begin
the recovery process, cool down, and bring your body back to a resting state?
The first thing to consider is your heart rate.
You don’t want to go from an intense workout, to completely stopping. Instead
you want to slowly bring the heart rate back down to normal by doing some
low-intensity activity such as walking for 5 - 10 minutes.
Next, we have the muscles. Once the heart rate
has dropped close to its resting level, you want to bring the muscles back to
their resting length, and clear out the waste products that accumulate during
intense exercise.
You can do this by stretching the muscles
for a comfortable and relaxed hold of 1 - 2 minutes each. This will return them to their natural
length, and get the recovery process started.
Finally, we look further ahead to fuelling
the body for optimal recovery. That means plenty of water to regain optimal
hydration, and a good meal that is high in protein as soon as possible.
This gives your body the nutrients it needs to start rebuilding and recovering from the workout.
